Central NJ Mask Bloc

we keep each other safe

Central NJ Mask Bloc is a disabled and queer led group promoting community care through mutual aid and education.

What is mutual aid?

Mutual aid is how we work together to meet each other's needs in our community. This comes from an understanding that the state and the oppressive systems we are forced to live under will not meet our needs, and in fact create or worsen the conditions we live in. When the world we live in is unjust, mutual aid is a radical response where we choose to connect with and care for one another and our collective survival. A mask bloc (like ours) is just one example of a mutual aid project.

What do we do?

We distribute free high filtration respirators and covid-19 rapid antigen tests (when available) through deliveries, community mask dispensers, tabling events, and local partnerships. We also provide educational resources to combat public health disinformation, misinformation, and eugenics propaganda.

Community Partnerships:
Solidarity in Action

Note: Our request form is always open to individuals needing masks and tests. The below statement is specific to our solidarity expectations with other organizing groups when requesting supplies from our bloc.

Central NJ Mask Bloc is eager to partner with fellow values-aligned organizers and groups to offer our community high-filtration respirators. One of our core values is that we practice centering access and those most impacted while working towards mutual liberation. If we are providing your group masks, then we need your commitment to combating anti-Blackness, promoting community care, and practicing disability justice, demonstrated by the following actions:• Require masks for your event or action.
• Be explicit about this requirement in your communications leading up to it.
• Require your members/volunteers to wear masks at your mutual aid/community tabling.
We also understand the exception of folks medically unable to mask - by requiring masks of your members that can mask, you are helping to keep our most vulnerable community members safer!Requesting masks for your group but not committing to these actions doesn't just mean excluding disabled people from the mutual aid you are organizing, but actively endangering them and our entire community! We must fight the eugenics of the state that wants us dead. Public health has failed us and our bloc is doing the most we can to keep our communities safe.We need you to resist with us!We will not decenter the most impacted by providing your group with supplies without this explicit and actionable commitment.

Why do we do what we do?

We believe in Sins Invalid's 10 Principles of Disability Justice. We resist eugenics and focus on caring for our community and our collective safety, because we believe we keep each other safe. The public health response to Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2) has been a failure. It has made fascist anti-mask propaganda mainstream. The United States, a imperial settler colony, has a history of eugenics, fascism, and genocide, which continues with this failed response. We are committed to combating and resisting mass death and disablement while keeping each other safe with the resources available to us. Masks are one of those resources and they serve multiple purposes. Everyone, not just disabled people, is at increased risk of dying or becoming disabled by Covid-19 and other airborne illnesses. There have been many ways disinformation has spread to create a false sense of normal in favor of capitalism instead of our safety:

  • The idea of "vax and relax" and that vaccines are the only protection you need

  • Refusing to acknowledge and prevent airborne transmission

  • Overall minimization of Covid and its dangerous effects

  • The lab leak propaganda that spreads anti-Chinese sentiment

  • Ending the Public Health Emergency even though Covid is still spreading, disabling, and killing many people

All of the above worked together to create a false story that we as a society agree to mass infection, disablement, exploitation, and death. This continues no matter what administration is in charge of the government or institutions like the CDC.

Our struggles are all connected!

  • We are queer and we learned that Long Covid has a disproportionate impact on Trans people. We know that Black and Indigenous people, and people of color in general, are less likely to be diagnosed with both Long Covid and ME/CFS because of racism and lack of access to medical care.

  • We are anti-capitalists. We know that Covid-19 is a labor issue, because racial capitalism continues to exploit, disable, and kill workers through forced covid infections, anti-mask policies, union-busting, lack of paid sick leave, etc.

  • We work on understanding how every part of our lives are affected by the ideology of white supremacy. We recognize that incarceration and forced institutionalization are violent and meant to disappear people the government finds undesirable. We also recognize the physical forces that carry out these ideologies like ICE, police, prisons and the US military. We believe abolition is liberatory and necessary.

  • We are anti-racists who recognize that ableism and anti-Black racism is central to the history of this country. Both of these ideas have continued to shape the country throughout history and today. There is the history of the genocide of the Native people of Turtle Island, the chattel slavery of African Americans, and forced sterilizations. Racist eugenics also continues today with white people being less likely to mask once they found out Black folks were most impacted by Covid.

  • We are anti-imperialists and we believe in resistance to colonialism by all means and land back. We believe this is necessary for global liberation and the survival of our planet - from Turtle Island to Palestine to Sudan to all oppressed people and occupied lands. We reject fascism in all its forms and the injustices committed by the US empire under each and every president - we refuse to accept that eugenics and genocide, here and abroad, is normal.

Our Commitments

These are our current agreements, last updated 7/17/2025

Our members wear masks indoors and outdoors whenever possible, because we care about those most affected by covid. We also believe in practicing our values while we work together for liberation. Even though the public health response to Covid-19 was a systemic failure, we understand that we as individuals must also fight the state's neglect, not add to it. We mask up to protect one another. Our members commit to choose care. We choose to become more informed, instead of choosing denial or to do nothing. We think choosing to do nothing and minimizing the pandemic is violent. We commit to supporting each other as we adapt to and survive the ongoing pandemic. We commit to this for future pandemics, climate disasters, and fascism. We work together in ways that listen to and trust our bodies and capacities. This may seem slow or go against what society says is "productive". We make decisions together so we can build community for the long-term. We believe building networks of safety and support for community care is important to surviving fascism. We are made up of community members, workers, patients, students, and caretakers. We believe everyone has the right to be in communal spaces safely. This includes spaces like public transportation, workplaces, medical and mental healthcare facilities, grocery stores, and schools. Safely means being in the space and not risking death, disablement, or further debilitation from Covid-19 and other airborne illnesses.Disabled and immunocompromised people deserve community and connection. We know that accessible, safer spaces for everyone are possible. Wearing a mask whenever possible makes these spaces possible for everyone. Especially for fellow disabled folks who can't wear their own respiratory protection*. There will be access friction and we believe it is possible to meet everyone's access needs without compromising safety. We also believe that solidarity with the most impacted, disabled and queer folks of the Global Majority, is necessary for collective liberation.

*This might mean not being able to mask sometimes (ex. having nausea because of overheating, being diabetic and needing to eat in an inaccessible space, etc.) or not at all (ex. people with trachs, those born without a jaw, neurologically and developmentally disabled folks who can’t tolerate masking, etc.)

Do you have covid?

Are you not sure if you have Covid? Did you know up to 60% of transmission comes from sources who are presymptomatic (before they show symptoms) and asymptomatic (they are sick, but show no symptoms). Here are various resources on testing, resting, and keeping others safe as you recover.
